Our Neighborhood Dogs

Sam and his Girlfriend

Indian street dogs Sam, the brown and white one, and Nodding Head dog, the black and white one. These are our names for them. Sam is a very gentle and friendly animal. Nodding head dog gets his name from a nervous disorder he has that causes his head to bob up and down all the time.

Nodding Head dog and Sam's Girlfriend

Sam is the neighborhood ladies man but at least all his girlfriends are faithful to him. Behind Sam here is one of his favorite ladies. Most of the time she is sitting or lying down because her back leg is shattered from an accident she probably had chasing after an auto-rickshaw.

Hi! My wife and I are also Americans living in Chennai with an adopted street dog! Her name is Prithvi--a pun on the name of our street (get it..."street" dog? We seem to be the only ones who find it funny). I ran across your page while finding (once more) pictures for relatives of her "breed" online. We name the dogs on our street as well! There's Bags, Meandog, Prithvi's sister, and One-Eye, may he rest in peace.

We read some of your main blog and enjoyed it! It's refreshing to see another blog on the subject of culture shock and adjustment in Chennai. Your writing's fantastic, too. Hope all's well.
